Charlotte Burgoyne, a Senior Veterinary Officer from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) will be visiting Norfolk Island in October to discuss Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu). She will be accompanied by fellow veterinary officer Michele Byers.
A new strain of bird flu (H1N5, different from the H7 strain affecting poultry in Australia), is causing concern globally with widespread disease outbreaks among wild birds and other species. The focus of this initial visit is to share information with the community, and to establish an on-island monitoring program.
