Our knowledge of pre-human island faunas is extremely limited due to the lack of historical and palaeontological records. Many species became extinct before scientists had a chance to study them; therefore, the original diversity of almost all islands remains unknown, especially the bird fauna. A team of palaeontologists and cavers will be on island to complete a palaeontological reconnaissance of all known caves and survey other areas, such as sand dunes and marshes, to determine the pre-human faunal diversity of the island.
