Brookes, Pat. 1990 On Norfolk. New York: Vantage Press. 80pp.This is a book of poetry expressing “the range of human emotion – the loneliness, anger, fear, joy, and frustration that are so much a part of who and what we are”, according to the cover promotion. “Whatever the poet’s subject is, be it the beauty and lushness of Norfolk Island, a quiet walk after the rain, or the changes in all of us as we grow older and perhaps wiser, these poems invite us to watch and share with her, her involvement and emotion, be it anguished, joyful, or sad.” The book follows the earlier The Gold is in My Eyes, in which she had just discovered Norfolk Island. “Now she has had time to savour this lovely place.”

Books by EP (Peter) Middleton

EP (Peter) Middleton was a long-term resident. He wrote in the tradition of Henry George, a political economist who toured Australia in the late 1800s and had a considerable influence in promoting “land value taxation”, reflected these days in municipal rating on the unimproved value of land. While Georgist views are relevant to the contemporary debate about land rating on Norfolk Island, the Centre has no public policy on taxation or rating and does not endorse the views in these little-known but thoughtful works.
