Compiled by retired geographer Ian Bowie, for presentation to a University of the Third Age audience at Bowral, New South Wales.
He has written to the Society: “My current interest in the island was ignited by a visit in 2020 in a group commemorating the loss of HMS Sirius and has led to lots of red herrings; the catalyst for the earlier revival of interest in the Pacific was lectures and excursions led by Terry Hunt during a cruise through the Marquesas on Aranui III in 2015…the [elderly] Kiwis on board had been taught a different story in their primary schools about Polynesian diffusion across the Pacific. A few were aware of more recent archaeological and anthropological interpretations but none knew of, for example, the findings of Wilmshurst, Hunt et al in High-precision radiocarbon dating shows recent and rapid initial human colonization of East Polynesia (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1015876108).
