Heiva Te Tupuna Vahine Bounty

The Knowledge and Learning Centre is pleased to present the music from the “Heiva Te Tupuna Vahine Bounty” CD and related videos and the accompanying songbook on behalf of contemporary artist Jacqui Teio Chapman-Shone and her family. These contemporary works have been created to “honour the precious culture of the Tahitian Women of the Bounty”.

The works have also been created to be publicly accessible for learning. Since release they have been taught to the music and cultural studies classes at the Norfolk Island Central School, used by the Norfolk Island senior women’s Polynesian dancing group and performed at the Auckland PASIFIKA Festival, the largest Polynesian festival in the world. The Shone family Jacqui, Mike and Sonya have generously given permission to reproduce them here.

Polynesian Protocols and the Making of the Musical Tribute

Click here for this explanation of Polynesian culture, by Jacqui Teio Chapman-Shone and Sonya Shone who have expressed a vision that Norfolk Island might become the official international centre of Bounty descendant knowledge and the go-to place for local research on Tahitian/Pitcairn/Norfolk culture with a global outreach.

Click here for “Our musical tribute to our Tahitian tupuna vahine”. The objective of this work honouring the Tahitian Women of the Bounty through “Heiva Te Tupuna Vahine Bounty” is to contribute to Polynesian cultural revival on Norfolk Island alongside others who have been working away for decades with the same goals on other aspects of Polynesian culture.

Click here for an MP4 recording of the blessing. This short (4-45 minute) video was made of the Blessing and Official Launching Ceremony in 2018 at the Auckland Museum Aotearoa when the “Heiva Te Tupuna Vahine Bounty” works were officially received into the Museum’s Polynesian Collection.  The occasion was televised by the NZ Tangata Pasifika programme and attended by the musicians involved in the production, members of Jacqui PACIFICA women’s organisation branch, and descendants of the six Tahitian women of the Bounty, family & friends.
