Norfolk Island, by virtue of its Tahitian heritage, as much as its geographical location, is unambiguously a Pacific Ocean entity. its involvement in Pacific Ocean affairs since settlement in 1856 has been intermittent. The advent of the Government of Norfolk Island on 1 January 2026 presages a new home-grown capacity to participate in Pacific affairs in parallel with Australia’s direct intergovernmental involvement.
Local public intellectual Dr Chris Nobbs penned an article for The Norfolk Islander of 10 January 2026 outlining the history of Norfolk Island’s involvement with the post-colonial South Pacific Commission.
