Welcome

Welcome to the public interface of the Norfolk Island Knowledge and Learning Centre, a forum for sharing knowledge about Norfolk Island, the people who inhabit it and those who govern it. Norfolk Island is an isolated territory in the South Pacific Ocean under the administration of Australia. The Centre has been formed for educational purposes and for showcasing the talents of the people of Norfolk Island. The foundations of the Centre are the distinctive culture and circumstances of the Norfolk Island people and their unique governance arrangements.

The KLC operates as both a virtual hub and a meeting place, at 70 Taylors Rd. The building houses the Community House, which is a leisure, library and study centre that is available on a “drop-in” basis whenever open, or for bookings for knowledge-sharing events by community groups. The CUC Tertiary Study Hub occupies an adjacent premises, 72 Taylors Road, under separate management.

Political stance
The KLC is non-partisan, non-political, secular and independent of any faction in public affairs. Sometimes it hosts events by groups active in political affairs, but the KLC is then acting as a neutral venue host. It has no policy positions on contentious matters of public affairs.

Opening Hours

From 10 January 2026, the Community House is open as follows:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday – 10 AM to 4 PM

Wednesday, Friday – 1 PM to 4 PM. Hours can be extended as volunteer supervisors become available. The Centre may close if the rostered Supervisor is unavailable.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday – 6 PM to 10 PM – Night Shift Cafe

Freshwater resources

A scientific paper published in February 2026 about the freshwater resources of the Island, written in collaboration with Island residents – see page on natural resources and environment. The paper finds that Norfolk Island’s freshwater biodiversity is patchily documented and seriously threatened by water quality issues, habitat disturbance, introduced species (woody weeds, aquatic plants, freshwater snails and live-bearing fishes) and a drying climate.all
